The field of rheumatology has to deal with the diagnosis (detection) and treatment of musculoskeletal disease and systemic autoimmune conditions often being referred to as rheumatic diseases. This requires a skilled physician, often known as a rheumatologist to assist in diagnosing conditions and offering treatment options in conjunction with a good rheumatic pharmacy. These diseases can affect the joints, muscles, and bones causing pain, swelling, stiffness, and deformity, which can dramatically lower the quality of life for affected patients. Therefore, getting the right medication and treatments are extremely important to keep healthy.

Autoimmune conditions occur when the immune system sends inflammation to areas of the body where it is not needed. This cause damage and symptoms to the body. In other words, these conditions happen when the body’s immune system is in haywire.

These diseases may also affect the eyes, skin, nervous system, and other internal organs. Rheumatologists treat joint disease similar to orthopedists but do not perform surgeries that are common in the latter. Instead, medication is used specifically to target certain conditions.

Common diseases treated by rheumatologists include osteoarthritis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic back pain, tendinitis, lupus, and more that affect the quality of life. Many rheumatologists in their respective fields also conduct research to find a cause of and better treatment of a rheumatic disease.

Rheumatologists may also work mainly in outpatient clinics. Primary care providers or other doctors often can refer patients to a rheumatologist for an evaluation if there are certain symptoms that require specific help from a specialist. Some rheumatologists do not require a referral from another physician typically in order for patients to make an appointment. Rheumatologists are typically affiliated with a hospital and will be asked to evaluate patients who are hospitalized for a rheumatic disease or some other similar condition.

Since everyone experiences muscle and joint pain from time to time, it is important that patients work with their primary care provider or rheumatologist in conjunction with a good compounding pharmacy to get the treatment and medication needed in order to improve their condition.
